For the fourth Christmas Eve since her sons murder, Julia Hudson, along with her sister, singer and actress Jennifer Hudson, tried to create something positive out of her familys tragedy. The Hudson sisters and volunteers gave Christmas gifts to thousands of youngsters Monday through a toy drive organized by the foundation Julia Hudson started to honor her son, the Julian D. King Gift Foundation. William Balfour, Julia Hudsons ex-husband, was convicted of the murders and sentenced in July to three life sentences. Julia Hudson started the foundation and toy giveaway to kind of help us heal, she said Monday. A line started forming at 3 a. The families, some with tiny babies, were ushered into waiting rooms where they sat, in some cases for hours, before making it to a room where each child chose one toy. Each child then received a board game and either a teddy bear or a ball. Atahjionna Bishop, 9, who came to the toy drive with her mother, two sisters and several cousins, got a new pink and white bike. Her older sister picked out a bracelet-making kit. Their mother, Tarlyn Waters, said the toy drive was especially appreciated this year because she and her family had just endured the expense of moving to a new home. In the toy room, Zion McKinnie, 9, started to cry when a gift she had her eye on was chosen by another girl. Juila Hudson asked her what she would want if she could have anything for Christmas. Zion said she wanted a tablet. Julia Hudson, without taking a moment to think about it, had someone grab her Samsung tablet and then gave it to the little girl. Her mother, Onjel McKinnie, made it clear she would have to share with her sister. Zion was fine with that. Organizers said the drive had 50, toys to give away this year, the most ever.

She grew up in a single-parent home and is someone who has never forgotten her roots, so its perhaps not surprising that one of Jennifers main focuses is helping children in need. After the horrific murder of her mother, brother and seven-year-old nephew Julian in , Jennifer and her sister Julia the mother of Julian decided to set up the Julian D. King Gift Foundation in honour of the little boy. The foundation helps children of all backgrounds to enable them to grow to be productive, confident and happy adults. It hosts various events each year, including the big Holiday Toy Drive where it collects and distributes school supplies and Christmas presents to kids in Jennifers hometown of Chicago. When we went shopping, you got two pairs of shoes and two pairs of clothes, and we were considered blessed. We make sure these kids have school supplies and presents for the holidays.
