It seemed especially appropriate that I spotted a wild turkey when I hiked in William Heise County Park a few months ago. Fall is a great time to visit this 1,acre park for several reasons. Its a mile west of Julian, known for apple pie. The crisp fall weather suits the higher elevation. And since skies tend to be clearer then, the panoramic views are astounding. Placards at the trail head note that more than 70 percent of the park was burned in the Cedar fire. There are four main trails in Heise park, three of them looping and interconnected. The fourth, the Cedar Trail, is separate and closer to the park entrance. All the trails cover a little more than five miles. On the self-guided trail, which has two starting points, hikers meander through oak, pine and cedar forests. Its remarkably lush and green, although burned trunks are dramatic reminders of the fires devastation. Along the trail, some of the trees and shrubs are labeled, offering a short course in local botany. You will see live oak, Jeffrey pine, eastwood manzanita, incense cedar and silver sage. See if you can find a Coulter pine, described on the placard at the start of the trail. They can grow to 70 feet tall and have the heaviest pinecones in the world. I headed right onto the Desert View Trail, which is steeper than going in the other direction. For a gentler climb, hike the Desert View Trail loop clockwise, coming down on the steeper section. At the lower elevations there is mixed forest, riparian and chaparral. You have reached the high desert zone when you begin seeing yuccas and agaves and an absence of trees. You will have climbed from feet to 4, feet in elevation. The reward is an amazing view. The Cuyamaca and Laguna mountains are to the south, the Anza-Borrego Desert is to the east, with the faintly blue expanse of the Salton Sea in the distance. Looking back toward where you started are layers of forested hills and mountains extending west. Theres a small telescope at the top, which didnt seem to make distant views much closer, but still felt like a prize after the steep climb. It was placed there in memory of Glenn Wyatt, a park ranger during the s. William Heise was an inventor and farmer who owned the property with his wife. So you never did get around to camping this summer. Another season spent without taking the tent out of the garage. I too am something of an accidental camper. Not me, not for the privilege of sleeping on the ground. My husband, Amnon, and I discovered the park by accident when we visited our year-old son, Sam, at his summer camp nearby. Looking to avoid the tourist scene in Julian, we followed the signs to Heise. There, a park map showed a half-mile, self-guided nature trail that looked like something even our 6-year-old daughter, Aviva, could manage on a hot day. But the major surprise was that more than half the campsites were empty, even though it was the weekend. On a Monday last month, I called for reservations for Friday and Saturday. To fill out the weekend, I also called a Julian observatory to sign up for Friday-night stargazing and planned a visit to a nearby wolf reserve for Saturday afternoon. On Friday we drove south to Oceanside and east on Highway 76, past suburbia, farm fields, ranches and wilderness — and the startling, garish Pala Casino. At Santa Ysabel, we picked up Highway 78, the main road into Julian, and turned off for the park about a mile outside town.
