Once a gift card has been sold, its very important to manually load the gift card into your POS system as soon as possible. Loading the gift card is what activates it for use. If a gift card has not been loaded into the POS system, the server will receive an error message when a guest tries to use their gift card towards a purchase. The admin of the OpenTable Gifts account for your restaurant will receive an email notification once the gift card has been sold. This notification will contain both the gift card number and the amount of the gift. The process for loading gift cards will vary based on your restaurants setup, but use the information detailed in the email notification when loading the card into your POS. A guest will present their gift card to your server either by showing a printed copy, or by displaying the gift card on his or her smartphone. In either case, the server will need to verify the unique gift card number that appears on the lower, right-hand corner of the gift card. To redeem the gift card, type the gift card number into the POS system, and enter the redemption amount. Your server will NOT be swiping the gift card. If a balance remains on the gift card, note the remaining balance and inform the guest for future use.
