Mar 31, Lori Bowman rated it liked it. Ive been told so many times that this book is a must have for anyone with a desire to make kanzashi. I eagerly ordered the book thinking it would be something special. I was very disappointed. Ms Gilleland is correct that kanzashi are hair ornaments decorated with fabric flowers among other things. However, this book isnt about that. This is a book about using fabric flowers to make other things. There are directions for making a couple types of petals and how to turn those into flowers. The Ive been told so many times that this book is a must have for anyone with a desire to make kanzashi. These arent the traditional methods but they are passable. There are no instructions for how to recreate actual species. Theyre just sort of generic flower shapes. By page 41 the interesting bits stopped leaving me to wonder where the rest went. Plastic Clover Kanzashi Makers do the same thing, are simpler to use and a collection of the makers gives a wider variety of petal types. From page 41 on the book is about making jewelry, belts, and wallets and such. There are instructions for hot gluing a flower onto a hair barrette but thats as close as the book gets to kanzashi. If youre looking for a book on that then this is a good book. If you want a book on tradition kanzashi look elsewhere. Shelves crafts. I know Diane and her work from her website www. My preferred medium is paper likewise a fiber art, if you will and it is the artistry on view in this book that has been such a great influence on my own work. Like many makers, I have an entire library of craft books I have collected over the years. It is rare, though, for me to come across a volume that makes me think, I wish Id written that. I doubt I came close but it was, and continues to be, a comfort to have had at my side such a fine example of what is possible. Jan 13, Fanie rated it it was amazing.
